Another Reason to Prevent Deforestation: Avoiding Future Pandemics

By Marissa Brock

The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, so we may not feel quite ready to think about the next one. But we have the tools to be more prepared next time around, and to lessen the likelihood and severity of a future pandemic.

The Link Between Deforestation and Historical Pandemics

Global pandemics such as the SARS outbreak, H1N1, and HIV have all been linked to pathogens that were transmitted from wildlife to humans. According to a 2020 UN report, close proximity to wildlife, brought on in part by global deforestation to clear land for livestock, plays a key role in the spread of zoonotic diseases. Deforestation continues to blur the line between human and animal populations, further increasing the likelihood that pathogens can pass between species.

What Companies Can Do

Companies need to implement and monitor zero-deforestation policies by mapping their supply chains to gain assurance that their operations are not contributing to ongoing deforestation. By ensuring their supply chains are deforestation-free, companies are not just enhancing their corporate sustainability practices: they are playing a key role in preventing global pandemics.
